Another type is more yellow and is produced from the leaves of the cinnamon shrub.

Almost all cinnamon essential oil is the reddish-brown type produced from the bark.

Another analysis from the article Composition, antimicrobial activity and in vitro cytotoxicity of essential oil from Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume (Lauraceae) in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology show the major compounds to be:

  • (E)-Cinnamaldehyde 68.95%
  • Benzaldehyde 9.94%
  • (E)-Cinnamyl acetate 7.44%
  • Limonene 4.42%
  • Eugenol 2.77%

As with most essential oils, differences in the environment (including nutrients in the soil) and the methods of extraction will produce differing levels of these compounds.

Cautions

Cinnamon helps blood circulation by thinning the blood, so it should not be used by those with hemophilia or those on anticoagulants. Keep the oil away from mucus membranes. Do not use if you have kidney disease, liver disease, prostrate cancer, or are pregnant. Can cause skin irritation, so test on a small area to see if you are allergic. Should not be used by children under 6 years of age.

In this video I’m going to talk to you about all of the many uses and benefits of cinnamon essential oil. And cinnamon oil has been used for thousands of years. I think you’re going to learn some surprising facts you didn’t know about cinnamon oil in this video and some great ways to use it for the benefit of your health.

First off, cinnamon essential oil has been used since the times of the Bible. In fact, it’s one of the most referenced essential oils in the Bible because it was part of the holy anointing oil. During Biblical times they made something called the holy anointing oil, which included cinnamon oil, cassia oil, calamus, myrrh, and olive oil. And when somebody was sick, what they would do is they would pour this oil over their heads. So you may have heard it anoint their head with oil. That was the holy anointing oil that was used
during religious ceremonies, but also used for when they needed healing. They would go to the priest, have them pray for them for healing, and then they were anointed with oil.

So we know cinnamon oil has been used for probably over 5,000 years. It’s also referenced in Egyptian medicine, Chinese medicine, Greek medicine. Cinnamon oil, one of those truly unique essential oils for those benefits.

Now cinnamon oil contains a compound called cinnamaldehyde, which makes up about 60-70% of cinnamon oil. And this compound has been shown to be beneficial for so many things, but I want to also give you the equivalent of it in powder form.

Typically one drop of cinnamon oil is the equivalent to one-third of a teaspoon of cinnamon powder. So keep that in mind.

And there are five main uses and benefits I want to talk about, how you should start using cinnamon oil.

Benefits of Cinnamon Essential Oil 1: Balance Blood Sugar

Number one is to help balance your blood sugar. Medical studies have shown that cinnamon oilvbhelps with something called GTF, Glucose Tolerance Factor, in balancing out your insulin levels. So whether you’re a type-1 or type-2 diabeticvbbor have syndrome X, or any of those issues, or hypoglycemia, cinnamon oil is somethingbyou want to add into your daily regime.

Now with cinnamon oil, you can simply defusebit around your home. That’s one of the great ways to get the benefits. Or you can carry it in your purse if you’re a female, or male and just keep it in your car. And just smell it every so often. You can gain benefits that way.

Now, under the care of a natural health provider you can do it internally. Now, again, you don’t want to go overboard with this. More isn’t better.

But one single drop of a pure, high-quality, therapeutic graded, organic cinnamon oil can have benefits. And if you use cinnamon oil, always use it with food. But you’ll just do one single drop. That’s the equivalent of one-third a teaspoon of cinnamon powder. You don’t need more than that. One single drop in a smoothie or one single drop in some apple sauce.

But that’s how you would use it if you’re going to use it internally, but also you can gain many of the benefits of cinnamon oil by just defusing it and smelling it in that way.

But again, it is incredible for your blood sugar levels and for insulin levels.

The number two reason to use cinnamon oil is because of its antimicrobial properties. Now my wife and I, Chelsea, we use it when we clean our house. We do a mixture of cinnamon oil with wild orange oil, and we defuse that in our house. We actually put it in a spray bottle with water and we use it to spray down our stainless steel appliances, our granite countertops. The smell is just amazing. Again, that cinnamon with that wild orange oil mixture together has such a clean smell and it’s great, especially around the holidays because of the great smell. But again, it’s antimicrobial in nature. A great thing to use around the house for cleaning, as well.

Benefits of Cinnamon Essential Oil 3: Antioxidant Properties

The third reason you should be using it it’s one of the most antioxidant rich oils on the planet. It falls in line number two, only behind clove oil. But cinnamon oil is very high in antioxidants, and for that reason can protect your body against free radical damage. And in that way, again, just defusing it around your house is a great way to use it on a regular basis.

Also, you can use it in a toothpaste because of its antimicrobial properties, jumping back a little bit, but I’ll do a mixture of just a little bit of cinnamon oil with other types of oil, such as sometimes a peppermint oil. Mix it with baking soda, coconut oil, and use it as a toothpaste. It’s great for cleaning your teeth and for the health of your gums.

Benefits of Cinnamon Essential Oil 4: Supports Weight Loss

The number four reason to use cinnamon oil is because it may support weight loss. We know that cinnamon itself, because of its ability to balance out insulin and prevent blood sugar spikes, is good for that reason. So again, cinnamon can also reduce sugar cravings and has a little bit of sweetness to it. So if you struggle with cravings for sweets and sugar, adding cinnamon to some recipes . . . in fact I did a little cinnamon oil, just a drop, in a carrot soup I did. A lot of times I’ll do it when I do cinnamon
pancakes for breakfast and even in a smoothie if I do a cinnamon apple smoothie. But cinnamon oil is great for supporting weight loss.

Again, just one single drop once to twice daily is all you need.

Benefits of Cinnamon Essential Oil 5: Improves Energy Levels

And then last, but not least, cinnamon is fantastic for your energy levels. I’ll do that with some peppermint oil. I’ll defuse that if I’m getting ready for a workout. Also, you might be this person to where sometimes your energy level is up and down during the day. Cinnamon helps with that glucose tolerance factor and those insulin levels to keep your energy going strong all day long. So again, using cinnamon oil, whether it’s defusing it or, again, a single drop internally is important.

Therapeutic Grade, Organic Cinnamon Essential Oil

And by the way, when you’re buying essential oils, make sure you’re buying therapeutic oils. Ideally that are organic in terms of their standard, but again getting a good quality essential oil is important because there’s a lot of junk out there. You want to buy it from a reputable company, and there are several out there, but again making sure you’re getting a high quality essential oil there, as well. And by the way, you can get something called CO2 cinnamon oil, which is a CO2 extract which is found in actually many brands today, of supplements, have that type of cinnamon oil in their supplement.

So again, cinnamon oil CO2 extract is probably the best if you’re going to do it internally, and CO2 essential oil probably the best essential oil to use if you’re going to be defusing it in your home or using it as a spray cleaner for those types of things. So again, cinnamon oil has so many benefits and uses.

I recommend to add it into your essential oil medicine cabinet on a regular basis.

Medicinal Benefits of Linalool include being an anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling and pain, a sedative to relax the central nervous system and relieve stress and anxiety, it is anti-epileptic, and is an insect repellent.

Over 200 different plants contain linalool including lavender, cinnamon, citrus fruits and some strains of cannabis. Linalool comes in two forms: R-linalool (known as licareol) and S-linalool (known as coriandrol). R-linalool and S-linalool have slightly different properties including different aromas. The more common form, R-linalool, is the one found in lavender. S-linalool is predominant in coriander which gives it the name coriandrol.

In lavendar essential oil, linalool compriselinaloolls between 23.03 to 57.48% of the essential oil.

Linalool Overview

Medicinal Benefits of Linalool as an Anti-inflammatory Agent

An article (Anti-inflammatory activity of linalool and linalyl acetate constituents of essential oils) in the journal Phytomedicine reports on tests of the anti-inflammatory activity of linalool.

The experimenters injected and irritant (carrageenin) into the hind paw of rats. They administered linalool at doses of 25, 50 and 75 mg/kg body weight. They monitored swelling after 1, 3, and 5 hours after carrageenin injection. The results indicated very significant reduction in swelling (P = 0.008 or better).

The authors conclude that their results “support the hypothesis that linalool and linalyl acetate play a major role in the anti-inflammatory activity displayed by some essential oils containing them. The present data suggest that alI plant species producing a relevant amount of these monoterpene compounds are potential anti-inflammatory agents.”

Medicinal Benefits of Linalool for Sedation

An article (Inhaled linalool-induced sedation in mice) in the journal Phytomedicine tessted the sedative properties of linalool.

The experimenters used vaporizers to distribute vapors in the inhalation chamber. Experimental mice were exposed to various concentrations of linalool. Controls were exposed to Tween 80 or no vapor. Mice were placed in the inhalation chamber for 60 minutes, then placed in observation cages. Locomotion, body temperature and sleep time were observed.

The results shows that linalool caused significant reductions in locomotion, reductions in body temperature and increased sleep time. The experiment demonstrated that limalool was able to induce sedation without impairment of motor abilities.

Medicinal Benefits of Linalool for Antimicrobial Effectiveness

An article (Antimicrobial effect of linalool and a-terpineol against periodontopathic and cariogenic bacteria) in the journal Anaerobe describes and investigation of linalool and α-terpineol as agents to fight bacteria that cause tooth decay.

Both linalool and α-terpineol exhibit strong antimicrobial activity. In this experiment researchers cultured 15 strains of bacteria related to dental caries (tooth decay). They added varying concentrations of linalool and α-terpineol to the cultures to determine the concentrations needed to stop the growth of bacteria (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration or MIC) and the concentration needed to kill the bacteria (Minimum Bactericidal Concentration or MBC).

The results indicated that the “MIC and MBC values of linalool or α-terpineol against mutans streptococci of the bacterial model system ranged from 0.1 to 3.2 mg/ml and 0.1-1.6 mg/ml, respectively.” This study shows that both linalool or α-terpineol are very effective in fighting bacteria.

It’s antibacterial, antiseptic, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties help control conditions such as acne, eczema and dandruff.

Lavender is a perennial herb that is native to northern Africa and the Mediterranean mountains. The plants are evergreens, growing about 6 feet tall when allowed to grow freely. They are often used as ornamental shrubs because of their colorful flowers and fragrant aroma. They can survive with limited water supplies. The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the flowers of the lavender shrub.

Lavender Species

Lavender essential oils primarily come from the raw flowering tips of these plant species:

  • Lavandula angustifolia (lavender)

  • Lavandula latifolia (spike lavender)

The “Journal of Chromatography A” reports on a study of lavender oil in the article Characterisation of lavender essential oils by using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry with correlation of linear retention indices and comparison with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography.

The article indicates that lavender essential oil has more than 100 individual chemical components. This study reported on the analysis of nine samples of lavender essential oil obtained from a single supplier. The samples were analysed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The following are the major chemical components of the samples with their % abundance range.

  • Linalool (23.03 – 57.48%)
  • linalyl acetate (4.1 – 35.39%)
  • 1,8-cineole (0.1 – 20.28%)

  • α-Terpineol (0.12 – 6.02%)
  • Hexyl butyrate (0.12 – 1.72%)
  • lavandulyl acetate (0.65 – 6.16%)

  • E-caryophyllene (0.45 – 2.83%)

It’s obvious that the environment in which the lavender is grown has a significant effect on the relative percentages of the chemical components making up the essential oil. Even from a single source, batches may vary in the concentrations of their chemical components.

Cautions

People with estrogen-dependent cancer should not use lavender oil. Because of its relaxing effect, lavender essential oil should not be used by those operating machinery or driving a car.

Benefits of lemongrass essential oil include repelling insects, treating infections, reducing fever, helping injured ligaments heal, reducing swelling, easing muscle pain, and relieves intestinal distress.

Lemongrass, comprising various species of the genus Cymbopogon, are tropical plants grown mostly in the tropics of South and Southeast Asia. It grows spontaneously in tropical regions and Savannah. Lemongrass essential oil is extracted from the leaves and stalks of these grassy plants.

Most popular is the Cymbopogon citratus species which has a strong lemon scent.

Lemongrass has a citrus scent and is often used in soaps, cooking, beverages, and herbal medicine. It’s a very popular oil in aromatherapy.

Benefits of Lemongrass Essential Oil

It is used around the world as a herbal medicine. It is used to treat a variety of problems:

  • India: gastrointestinal problems
  • China: ansiolitic (inhibits anxiety)
  • Malay Peninsula: flu, fever, pneumonia, gastric problems
  • Nigeria: reduce fever and muscle spasms
  • Indonesia: promote digestion and improve production of urine.
  • Africa & Asia: relieve coughs, antiseptic, promote sweating, reduce pain

Lemongrass essential oil uses and benefits come about because of the chemical components of lemongrass oil.

The journal article Chemical composition of Cymbopogon citratus essential oil and its effect on mycotoxigenic Aspergillus species indicatea the oil contains a “high percentage of geranial (39.53%), neral (33.31%), and myrecene (11.41%).” These three chemical components of lemongrass represent 84.25% of all chemicals found in lemongrass essential oil.

One component often mentioned with lemongrass is Citral. This comes in two forms or isomers. One is known as geranial (citral A) while the other is known as neral (citral B). These components were listed separately above.

So, we can write the major components of lemongrass essential oil as follows:

  • Citral (72.84%)
    1. Citral A / geranial (39.53%)
    2. Citral B / neral (33.31%)
  • Myrecene (11.41%)

Additional minor components and their concentrations often mentioned for lemongrass include:

  • Citronellal 0.12%
  • Geranyl acetate 0.24%

The lemongrass essential oil uses and benefits often depend on where the lemon grass is grown. Weather conditions and soil nutrients play an important role in the concentrations of chemical components of lemongrass oil.

Another study, Application of molecular sieves in the fractionation of lemongrass oil from high-pressure carbon dioxide extraction showed ranges (in parts per million) for these components from various samples as follows:

  • geranial 46.2-80.6 ppm
  • neral 22.6-63.7 ppm
  • myrecene 0.8-3.6 ppm

So, it’s obvious that various samples will contain different concentrations of these components. Environmental conditions where the plants are grown and methods of oil extraction can contribute to these differences.

These chemical components of lemongrass essential oil actively affect various parts of the body to address a range of conditions.

Lemongrass essential oil has been shown to have many important benefits and uses including:

  • Antimicrobal properties. Helps to heal wounds and prevent infections from bacteria.
  • Antifungal properties. Works against fungi that cause athlete’s food, ringworm and jock itch.
  • Anti-inflammatory properties. Reduces edema or swelling when applied topically. And, as swelling goes down, pain is often relieved.
  • Reduces stress. Aromatherapy often reduces stress and anxiety.

Cautions

Lemongrass can cause skin irritation. So try an application to a small area of skin before using it as a general massage oil. Also, people with estrogen-dependent cancer or children under the age of 6 (some say under the age of 2) should not use this oil.

Hey guys, Dr. Axe here. Doctor of functional medicine and founder of Dr. Axe dot cam. Today I’m going to talk to you about one of my favorite essential oils. And that’s peppermint essential oil.

Peppermint oil benefits are incredible. And the uses for peppermint essential oil have been proven for thousands of years. Now I want to start with this, and this is going to surprise you I bet.

Benefits and Uses of Peppermint Essential Oil

When I started looking into essential oils and their health benefits, I knew they were used throughout history for over 5,000 years. I knew they were beneficial, but I didn’t know how many medical studies there would be on them. When I went into PubMed and started looking at the medical literature, I was shocked to find out, on peppermint oil alone, there are over 1,200 medical studies. So over a thousand medical studies on this essential oil.

Benefits of Peppermint Essential Oil – Digestive Tract

Proving that it helps heal your digestive tract, that it improves your breath, that it fights cancer, some incredible benefits there of this essential oil. And what makes peppermint oil so powerful is it contains a compound called menthol. And this compound has been shown to act as an analgesic on the body, reduce inflammation, and act as an antioxidant.

So I want to share with you some of the best ways to use peppermint oil. By the way, peppermint oil is one of the top two used essential oils in the United States today, along with lavender essential oil. But peppermint oil, one of the most common ways I use it as a natural breath freshener, and in my natural toothpaste recipe.

So what I do for my natural toothpaste is I mix coconut oil with baking soda, so equal parts. Let’s say a tablespoon of each along with about 20 drops of peppermint oil. Mix that together and that’s what I use for my natural toothpaste at home, using peppermint essential oil.

The other way I’ll use peppermint essential oil is, this is kind of a natural mouthwash or breath freshener. Just I put one drop in water and drink it down. Freshens breath.

Benefits of Peppermint Essential Oil – Boosts Energy Levels

Another way peppermint oil has been shown to benefit your health is by naturally boosting your energy levels. In fact, there is a recent medical study that found by just smelling peppermint oil it naturally increases your energy levels. So my wife actually carries this around in her purse with her. And before we go into a workout, sometimes we’ll smell it.

I know a professor, and this is incredible as well, a professor who works with his students and he actually diffuses cedar wood oil and peppermint oil during his classroom because cedar wood oil has been shown to help ADHD symptoms and improve focus. Peppermint oil improves his energy and concentration. And so he actually diffuses this in his oil in his classroom to help his children focus while they’re test taking. And so this is great for that reason as well.

Peppermint oil has also been shown in medical studies to help soothe irritable bowel syndrome and leaky gut-like issues. And so if you struggle with digestive issues, peppermint can really help soothe and cool your digestive tract. And just one to two drops and water taken daily is greatly beneficial. Or you can actually just put it right on your skin as well.

Benefits and Uses of Peppermint Essential Oil – Opens Airways

Another great thing to use peppermint oil for is to open your Airways for both bronchitis, for allergies, for asthma. You can mix peppermint oil with eucalyptus oil and use it as a natural vapor rub.

So again, a tablespoon of coconut oil, five drops peppermint, five drops eucalyptus, rubbing that on the chest is a natural vapor rub. Helps open up the lungs and Airways. It’s also great during allergy season. Whether you just put a drop under your tongue, or do it in water, or rub it again on your neck, it really helps open those sinus Airways and lung Airways, helping you breathe better.

Also it can help eliminate headaches. If you’ve got headaches, mixing three drops of lavender oil, three drops of peppermint oil on your hand, rubbing them on your neck area actually has been shown to naturally help relieve headaches.

Benefits of Peppermint Essential Oil – Sore Muscles and Joints

Peppermint Essential Oil can be used if you’re making your own at-home muscle, sort of a muscle rub. And so again, in your at-home muscle rub, peppermint oil is one of the best, along with frankincense as well. You get a little bit of, you can mix that with some coconut oil. So, you’ve got sore muscles or sore joints after a workout, or even arthritis, you can rub peppermint oil mixed with coconut oil right on the area and it can now to relieve pain.

I could go on and on and on. There are so, with over a thousand medical studies done in peppermint oil, we know it’s greatly beneficial.

Benefits of Eucalyptus Essential Oil include relief of pain and inflammation, improving respiratory conditions, sanitizing, and even repelling insects.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil Comes From Leaves

Eucalyptus plants from the family Myrtaceae are tall evergreen trees that are native to Australia, Tasmania and nearby islands. Now they can than be found all around the world. They represent over 500 (some report 700) distinct species.

Eucalyptus oil is made from the leaves of eucalyptus trees. The leaves are dried, crushed and then distilled to produce the oil. The most common species used to make essential oils are

  • Eucalyptus Globulus (Blue Gum, Fever Tree, or Gum Tree),
  • Eucalyptus Radiata (Narrow-Leaved Eucalyptus) and
  • Eucalyptus Citriodora (Lemon Eucalyptus).

Characteristics of Eucalyptus Essential Oil

The oils from these different eucalyptus trees are all very similar. They can be used interchangeably or even blended together. The main difference is in the aroma.

The oil itself is colorless, but has a distinctive taste and aroma. The important medicinal benefits of eucalyptus oil come, primarily, from a compound know as eucalyptol or cineole. This compound has antimicrobial properties and is used in many over-the-counter preparations including rubs, inhalers, creams and mouthwashes.

The compounds in eucalyptus oil that produce the benefits are described in a journal article in the “Journal of Stored Products Research”, Activity of essential oil and its major compound, 1,8-cineole, from Eucalyptus globulus Labill., against the storage fungi Aspergillus flavus Link and Aspergillus parasiticus Speare. The major compounds are:

  • Eucalyptol or 1,8-Cineole (89.95%)
  • Tricyclene (2.95%)
  • β-Pinene (1.64%).

Other compounds are found at less than 1% concentrations.

Experiencing the Benefits of Eucalyptus Essential Oil

The ways eucalyptus oil should be used are for inhalation (via diffuser or a steam) and topically when diluted with other oils as a rub (similar to Vicks® VapoRub™).

The benefits of eucalyptus essential oil include revealing pain, reducing inflammation, clearing respiratory mucus, fighting viral and fungal infections. It is found in cough and cold medicines, mouthwashes, soaps, and in cleaners to help sanitize household areas.

Cautions

Do not take eucalyptus oil internally. Avoid using eucalyptus oil with children under 6 or with people who have epilepsy, estrogen dependent cancer, or high blood pressure.

Hi. I’m Andrea from aroma head Institute. And I want to show you a couple of my favorite ways to use eucalyptus essential oil.

Now there’s a couple different kinds of eucalyptus essential oils. Today I have oil from two species of eucalyptus plants, eucalyptus radiata, and I have eucalyptus globulus. I love them both.

They have very similar uses. They’re very similar from a chemistry perspective and from an aromatic perspective. I think the radion is a little softer and I happen to have more of it, so I’m gonna use that in this video. But they’re pretty interchangeable.

So that we’re gonna show three different uses.

Benefits of Eucalyptus Essential Oil for Cleaning

The first benefit of eucalyptus essential oil is as a cleaning spray, a really nice cleaning spray. It’s so simple. It’s just a 16 ounce spray bottle that I’ve filled a lot of the way with water. And I’m gonna add a dash of vinegar. I’m gonna add two mils of the eucalyptus. It’s a great cleaning spray. It’s very simple. But as you clean, you’re opening up your sinuses and actually supporting your health. I love that.

So I have a container of white vinegar here. A little jug. And I am literally just gonna put in a little dash, and it’s not really that much, and it doesn’t really need to be defined either. Like we don’t need to say a quarter of a teaspoon or half a teaspoon. Sort of up to you. But just a little – okay.

And then from there I’m going to add in the essential oil. Now I want to put 50 drops of essential oil in. And that’s a lot. So it’s a lot of drops is what I mean, to count. And so instead of counting, I’m going to use a graduated cylinder. This is my graduated cylinder. And it’s graduated by the mill. I’m going to put two mils in. So much easier than counting 50 drops. So I’m just gonna bend down and hold the bottom of the graduated cylinder so that it stays stable. And then I’m gonna add the eucalyptus right into here to two mils.

I know people don’t always think about cleaning with eucalyptus, but I have to say it works so well. And I love that I can also feel like I am opening up my breathing and supporting my sinuses, even potentially reducing a headache simply by using my cleaning spray. How about that?

So then, I’m gonna add the essential oil right into the spray bottle, And of course it’s not going to blend because it’s oil and water. It’s gonna stay at the top, but that’s okay. And the eucalyptus covers the smell of the vinegar really nicely. So if you’re not a huge fan of vinegar, this will still work for you.

And then before I use it every time before I use it I’m just gonna shake it so that I disperse the essential oil droplets all through it. Then it sprays really really nice from there. You can clean from there. Since it is oil and water, I make this fresh really frequently. I’ll make enough to use for about a week or two and then I’ll make it again. And you can vary these oils that you use in your cleaning spray. But I love eucalyptus. So that’s blend number one.

Benefits of Eucalyptus Essential Oil for Pain Relief

Now another way that you can use eucalyptus is in wonderful blend for topical use. So in this case we’re going to use jojoba oil. Jojoba wax really. Liquid oil as the base and it’s going to be a blend for aches and pains Because eucalyptus is so good at reducing inflammation and reducing pain and bringing circulation to the area.

I know a lot of people think just of congestion with eucalyptus, But it’s also really good for reducing pain. So I’ve got this wonderful roll-on bottle. I love this and I’m gonna put a whole boat right into this bottle. It’s 10 mils and it’s a little glass bottle. It’s cobalt blue. And I’m gonna put in and fill this just about all the way up to the shoulder, and leave room, because I’m going to put in 6 drops of eucalyptus.

So funny. I went to smell it. I was like well there’s no there’s no smell because there’s no oil in it yet. But hope it doesn’t have much of an aroma at all. So it’s very neutral.

Let me grab my eucalyptus. I’m gonna put 6 drops into this 10 mils. Six which is a nice strong blend actually. It’s really good for pain. I’m gonna put it down on the table before I pop the top on. The top has a really great little stainless steel roller ball. I love that.

Then you can just apply this blend to any area that’s feeling like it’s hurting, or maybe from overuse, whatever it might be. So good. And on the side if you happen to have a cold or flu or allergies you could apply this to your chest, to the back of your neck. I just wouldn’t put it on my face because it’s a little strong to get a right around the eyes. Those eucalyptus fumes are pretty strong. So I would just use it on the back of my neck or my chest. It’s great to use on your feet. So that’s your second eucalyptus blend.

Benefits of Eucalyptus Essential Oil to Reduce Sinus Congestion

Now the third one is not really a blend. The third use of eucalyptus. As much as it is, for when you are sick. When you have that cold or flu, or you’re having allergies and your head is stuffy. And in particular, if you have a sinus headache this is great.

I have a bowl of, well, it was steamy hot water, it’s just warm water now. But steamy hot water is what you would put in this bowl. And all you do is put one drop of eucalyptus into the bowl. Then you can do a steam. And I love doing steams because they just clear your head. So I would go ahead and bend down. I would smell the oil and I would have a towel over my head. And then just steam with it. And you know, it’s really funny, I don’t even have to have a towel because I can just smell it from here. So I would steam with it for about a minute. Close my eyes. Smell it. Clear my head.

And then I would leave this bowl in the room where I’m hanging out, wherever that might be. So it continues to diffuse into the air and it will smell so good and really help you clear your sinuses.

Summary of Benefits of Eucalyptus Essential Oil

So in summary we’ve created we’ve three different uses for eucalyptus, right. We made a great cleaning spray. And of course you could always add other oils into this cleaning spray if you wanted to. You might put some pinyon pine in. You might put some Siberian fir. Maybe some orange that would be really nice. But for now we’ve got a beautiful eucalyptus cleaning spray. We’ve got our beautiful roll-on for sore muscles and or cold or flu or allergies. And we’ve got the steam. So all these uses for eucalyptus. I hope you enjoy it.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant produced compounds that are effective in protecting plants and promoting the reproduction of plants. Essential oils typically protect a plant from disease (such as bacteria and fungus), repel dangerous bugs or other wildlife, and attract bees and other pollinators to help ensure survival of the species.

For humans, essential oils perform much the same functions. They can protect people from bacteria and fungus, repel unwanted bugs, and produce pleasant aromas. Science and experience have also found that essential oils affect your mood and many bodily organs.

Essential oils are usually steam-distilled from parts of a plant. The essential oils are natural mixtures of organic compounds. Each compound, separately, has unique properties that benefit plants and humans.

Essential oils are extracted from roots, leaves, buds, flowers, seeds, fruit, wood, twigs and the bark of plants. The extracted essential oils are highly concentrated. Before use, essential oils are normally mixed with a “carrier” oil such as sweet almond oil, coconut oil or olive oil to dilute the essential oil.

Over 3000 different essential oils are known, but, only about 300 have commercial importance. They are primarily used in the flavors and fragrances market.

Essential oils are often slippery like oil. And they contain the essence of the odor and flavor of the plant. Hence the name essential oil.

Compounds Make the Difference Between Essential Oils

Each essential oil is composed of a number of organic compounds. The difference between essential oils is the various compounds that are present and how much of each compound is found in each essential oil.

Essential oils are organic mixtures of low molecular weight chemical compounds. They are typically extracted from plants by steam distillation, though sometimes various solvents are used to recover the oils. The most important types of compounds are terpenoids and phenylpropanoids which supply the smell and biological properties to the oils.

The compounds can be detected with scientific instruments like a gas chromatograph or mass spectrometer. Some of the compounds found in essential oils are listed below.

These compounds are of interest to scientists who have studied their properties. But, what’s important for us is what specific compounds make up each essential oil. For, example, the major components (comprising > 1%) of peppermint essential oil are:

So, it becomes clear that only a few of the most prevalent compounds are really important and have a significant effect in peppermint essential oil.

Most often, several of the organic compounds in an essential oil work together to maximize the effectiveness. Many times the biological activity of the oil cannot be attributed to any of the compounds working alone. An example would be rosemary oil’s effect against insect larvae while the individual compounds have littler or no effect.

And, you should know that the exact amounts of each compound in an essential oil vary depending of the source. Differences may be caused by different climates, seasons of cultivation, soil nutrients, or methods of preparation. In addition, the different parts of a plant (roots, stems, leaves, fruits, flowers and fruit-peels) have different chemical components.

Here are the analysis results from four samples obtained from four commercial sources:

So, we must understand that essential oils are not “standardized.” They come from real living plants that react to the environment around them. When you find an essential oil that helps you, continue to obtain it from the same source to help ensure uniform results.

Scientists continue to study essential oils in a variety of clinical trails. For example, 48 studies are currently ongoing or preparing to start. Some of these studies include:

Clove essential oil is typically extracted from the dried flower buds of the clove tree (Eugenia caryophyllata). So, it is sometimes called clove bud oil. The leaves and stems of the clove tree have stronger chemical concentrations are are usually not used for aromatherapy, but clove leaf oil and clove stem oil can also be found.

The clove buds are picked and allowed to dry. They can then be ground up for use as a spice or they can be steam distilled to produce the essential oil.

Clove essential oil has a high ORAC value (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) of 1,078,700. This is the highest value of any essential oil. It helps protect against free radical damage which includes harming DNA (which may cause cancer) and living cell membranes, sometimes causing cell death.

The benefits of clove essential oil derive from the individual chemical compounds found in the oil. The African Journal of Plant Science article, Constituents of the essential oil from leaves and buds of clove (Syzigium caryophyllatum (L.) Alston), describes the major components of clove bud oil as containing:

  • Eugenol – 49.71%
  • Caryophyllene – 18.94%
  • Benzene, 1-ethyl-3-nitro – 11.12%
  • Benzoic acid, 3-(1-methylethyl) – 8.95%
  • Elixene – 3.87%
  • Caryophyllene oxide – 1.53%
  • α-Farnesene – 1.11%

The most prevalent ingredient, eugenol, is found in several essential oils including:

  • Clove
  • Nutmeg
  • Cinnamon
  • Basil
  • Bay leaf

This oil has a long history. It has been used for thousands of years by the Chinese for its fragrance and as a spice in foods. They would use cloves for good breath when they had an audience with the emperor. It anciently was used by the Greeks and Romans and has been popular in Ayurvedic medicine.

While the FDA classifies clove oil as one of the Generally Recognized as Safe Substances (GRAS), some experts on essential oils indicate that clove oil should not be used by pregnant women, young children under 6, or people with cancer.

But you can put a drop in water and just hold that water, and one drop of clove oil in your mouth. And it will help promote healthy gums and promote healing. So get approval from your dentist. But that’s a great way to use clove oil as well.

Another thing that we do in our home is we like to bake with clove, clove oil. So you can substitute a drop of clove oil when you’re baking pumpkin bars or pretty much anything. You can even make a little chili a with some of the essential oils that have similar spices like a little bit of cinnamon, cardamom, clove. And add that to some warmed up milk or non-dairy alternative.

Another thing that you can do with your clove oil is to diffuse it. So, right now I have a diffuser blend going in our diffuser. It smells like I’ve been baking all day. But I haven’t. I just got out of the shower. I haven’t even cooked breakfast yet. But it is just a couple drops each of your clove essential oil, wild orange, and cardamom. So cardamom, wild orange, clove: couple drops of each smells absolutely fabulous.

Benefits of lime essential oil include preventing and easing viral and bacterial infections, helps reduce fever, and prevents signs of aging.

Externally, it can help prevent infections of wounds, relieve skin conditions such as acne, sores and rashes, and relieves sore muscle and arthritis pain. Internally, it helps reduce infections from the mouth, throat, intestines, to the colon, as well as the urinary system.

Lime come from a short and bushy evergreen tree (Citrus aurantifolia). There are two main types of limes: Mexican lime (also called Key lime) and Tahiti lime (called Persian or Bearss lime). It originated in Southeast Asia and spread into northern Africa. It grows in warm climates throughout the world.

Lime essential oil is extracted from lime peels by cold compression of fresh peels or steam distillation of dried peels. The oil itself ranges from pale yellow to light olive in color and has a citrus scent.

Chemical Compounds in Lime Essential Oil

The chemical components of lime essential oil give the oil its properties. The amount of each component found in a sample of oil depends on the environment in which the limes were grown and the methods used in extracting the oil. An article in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Volatile Components of Peel and Leaf Oils of Lemon and Lime Species, describes the amounts of various chemical components found in several peel samples. Components with at least 1% presence in some samples include:

  • limonene (40.4 – 94.4%)
  • γ-terpinene (trace – 21.5%)
  • β-pinene (trace – 19.2%
  • α-pinene (0.2 – 2.4%)
  • sabinene (0.1 – 19.6%)
  • myrcene (0.8 – 2.0%)
  • γ-terpinene (trace – 20.6%)
  • p-cymene (trace – 5.6%)
  • terpinolene (trace – 1.1%)
  • citronellal (trace – 1.6%)
  • citronellal (0.1 – 1.4%)
  • trans-R-bergamotene (0. – 1.4%)
  • terpinen-4-ol (trace – 1.7%)
  • neral (trace – 3.1%)
    α-terpineol (trace – 4.7%)

  • β-bisabolene (0.3 – 2.4%)
  • neryl acetate (trace – 2.0%)
  • geranial (0.0 – 6.1%)
  • (E,E)-α-farnesene (0.0 – 1.9%)
  • geranyl acetate (0.0 – 2.4%)

These compounds give lime essential oil its fragrance and taste as well as it antioxidant, antiseptic, antimicrobial, fever reducing, wound healing, digestion enhancing properties.

Cautions About Using Lime Essential Oil

Diluted lime essential oil applied to skin can cause irritation. Test an application on small areas before using it for a general massage. Also, lime essential oil applied to the skin will cause photosensitivity, causing chemically induced skin irritation in sunlight. So avoid direct exposure to sunlight for 12 to 24 hours after application.

So it’s one of those oils that I love to use with peppermint to actually bring down a fever when my children are sick or don’t feel good. I use lime as my number one go-to oil when my children have mucus in their in their chest and they’re dealing with congestion. So simply, literally just applying lime and then a warm compress over the top of that.

But if you’re someone who, you have chicken pox, or you have a child that’s dealing with chicken pox, lime is a great oil for that.

So, when we’re talking about someone who’s dealing with suicidal thoughts, depression, apathy, discouragement, really just grief or sad thoughts and feelings, lime is something that can really help bring joy into their life again. Right.

It can help us to feel happiness. To feel emotionally safe, revitalized, courageous, and to be able to just be back to our happy normal selves. Really give us that zest and determination to live life to the fullest, and to live life joyfully. And so lime is a great oil for that.

So it’s a really fun one to diffuse in your home. It just smells amazing. It’s a fun one to cook with and to clean with. And all of those fun things.
